What to use the strawberry leaf for

By

Eating strawberries for your dessert is one thing we all love doing. Served on a fruit platter, by themselves with cream or even on top of a cheese cake, it doesn't matter, strawberry are just one of those fruits which many of us love.

In fact you now see supermarkets, hardware stores along with garden centres selling strawberry plants at the beginning of the summer.

But for the following recipes I give you I advise that all the food is organic grown or if your using wild strawberry leaves, make sure they are safe to eat.

So your growing your strawberries in your garden hoping that some morning there will be enough on there for you to have some for your breakfast.

But while your waiting for the strawberries to come out and ripen, did you know you could be using the leaves of the plant also?

When your growing your own strawberries or as I mentioned above foraging for wild strawberries, remember to pick off the young leaves from the plant. If you can do this late spring or early summer, it would be best. Ensure you use only the fresh leaves or completely dried leaves when consuming them not something between the two.

So here are some recipes which you could use the leaves of the strawberries for.

STRAWBERRY LEAF TEA

Ingredients:

Strawberry Leaves ( If using dried leaves, always grind up in a coffee blender first)

Boiling Water

Sugar or Honey

Method:

Place a few of the fresh leaves or completely dried leaves into a teapot and pour over boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes and then pour. You can add honey or sugar to sweeten the taste to your liking.

This tea is believed to help with many types of internal body ailments such as intestinal sluggishness, liver disease, jaundice, gout and kidney ailments like stones and also is helpful if you suffering from diarrhea.

HERBAL BATH SOAK

Ingredients:

Strawberry Leaves

Oatmeal

Pestle and Mortar or Blender

Method:

Place all the ingredients together and blend to a fine powder. Then place them in a muslin bag and tie securely. Now fill your bath with water and drop the bag in to soak.

This soak is helpful if you have any aches and pains you want cured.

Note: If your dog has oily skin, you can use this liquid to bathe them in as the smell is not overpowering to their senses.

Well that's news to me. I grow strawberries but never occurred to me that the leaves could be used too. I will try the tea recipe.

Thanks for posting

@LuisEGonzalez, ya i agree, it's amazing what you can use these days. I'm using the face tonic myself.

It is amazing that people often ignore the fact that fruit leaves can be twice as useful as the fruit. In the Caribbean where I'm from, herb teas are kind of traditional so we make wide use of the leaves of fruit trees as well as other herbs which are known to have medicinal properties. We use the teas not only as remedies, but as beverages too.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing this with us.

@ Joyette Fabien, your so lucky you were raised with that knowledge. It's amazing that some countries just naturally know all this stuff. I think here in Ireland a lot of us don't realise the benefits of the things nature just natually has to offer us.

@ novascotiamiss, thanks for taking the time out to read it. Glad you enjoyed it....

Well who knew?! I've never heard of using strawberry leaves for anything. Thanks for the info on "how to."

sangre 12 months ago

@ RTalloni, I know, as Joyette Fabien said, there is a lot of plants out there that we don't know we can use.

I was searching for some strawberry dishes on Traffup and found your lovely article. I'd definitely try "Strawberry Leaf Tea" as I'm kinda getting bored of drinking regular tea :)

@ john.maco, that's a great idea, plus it's nice to drink something that has great health benefits also.

What awesome information here. I never knew the strawberry leaf could be homeopathic. The skin tonic, tea, and bath are on my list.

sangre 4 months ago

@ jenubouka, the things we can eat, drink and bath in are amazing. The great thing is we can either get them easily or have them growing in our gardens.

I am going to make a triumph attempt this year to do just that, last year slipped away from me, and strawberries are a definite for planting, what about raspberry leaves, well wait then again, it would be quite painful to get those little suckers...

sangre 4 months ago

@jenubouka, Will have to look into the raspberry thing. When you plant your own fruit, it a lot more easier, that having to search for them. Where I live a lot of the time, you have to go pass the nettles to get the wild raspberries. V.tricky. Good luck with your NY plan. :-)
